RADIOLOGY: GASTROINTESTINAL: GI: Case# 65: APPENDICITIS. Patient is a 21 year old male with right lower quadrant abdominal pain. The appendix is mildly dilated with a thickened appendiceal wall. Mild strandy inflammatory changes are seen surrounding the appendix. No periappendiceal fluid collections are present. No free air or fluid is seen in the abdomen or pelvis. CT findings in early or mild appendicitis include thickening and dilatation of the appendix with adjacent inflammatory changes. More severe cases will present with a ruptured appendix and a periappendiceal abscess. A calcified appendicolith can be seen in about 25% of cases.
