This photomicrograph of the mucosal surface shows a small area with normal mucosal epithelium (arrow). This area is surrounded by areas of ulceration with an inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes and neutrophils.

An infiltrate is an accumulation of cells in the lung parenchyma--this is a sign of pneumonia.
