In the last decade, science has witnessed unprecedented advances in the understanding of fundamental biological and disease processes. It is an exciting time to be at the forefront of scientific discovery, and there is no more opportune place to be in this position than the UAB Department of Pathology and the Molecular and Cellular Pathology Graduate Program.


Determined by Academic Analytics, as reported in
The Chronicle of Higher Education, the UAB Pathology program
is ranked among the top 3 programs in the country and
is yet another example of the excellent work being
done by our students and faculty within our program.


Consequently, UAB Pathology continues to be one of the leading Pathology graduate programs in the nation, and the Molecular and Cellular Pathology graduate program continues to educate and train future scientists in translational research.



The UAB Department of Pathology grosses
$25 million annually in research grants and contracts, ranking 6th nationally among Pathology Departments in NIH funding.


The University of Alabama at Birmingham is nestled in the foothills of Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama, and consists of a world-renown medical and research center with more than $433 million in research funding, state-of-the-art facilities, and student enrollment of more than 17,000 students in a student-friendly metropolitan campus environment.



The UAB Department of Pathology employs 82 full-time faculty of which 49 are involved with disease research in AIDS, cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gene therapy, immunopathology, infectious diseases, matrix biology, metabolic bone diseases, neuropathology, and obesity.



Departmental research facilities are state-of-the-art, and include core facilities for transgenic animals, microarrays, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, genomics and proteomics, high resolution imaging, peptide synthesis, and X-ray crystallography.
