Cancer research involves tumor invasion, tumor markers, and cancer genetics.

Cancer encompasses over 200 diseases where cells lack normal growth control. Research involves integrated, multidisciplinary approaches, from the DNA through whole organisms, and includes translational research using human cells and tissues. Student projects are customized, depending upon the hypotheses being tested. Most involve state-of-the-art molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, biochemistry, immunology, and cell biology techniques.

Signal transduction is the process through which cells communicate with each other and their environment.  The program has a broad range of expertise in this area investigating the mechanisms of cell death and survival. Typical student projects encompass areas of cardiovascular and cancer to define the mechanisms of free radical and cytokine signaling during pathogenesis.

Cell adhesion and migration are involved in the development and function of almost every organ, and are essential for blood pressure maintenance, bone remodeling, nerve network building, and tumor metastasis. Typical student projects investigate the mechanisms involved in abnormal adhesion and migration that contribute to pathological states of different diseases.

Translational research in neoplasia focuses on bringing the laboratory discoveries to the clinic. Studies are in progress to develop strategies for early detection, diagnosis, prognosis and predicting the efficacy of treatment of several human cancers. These studies utilize multi-disciplinary approaches involving molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, cell biology, and bioinformatics.
