AIDS research includes vaccine development & T-cell biology of HIV infection and pathogenesis of AIDS.

HIV attacks the cells of the host immune system and undermines its ability to fight pathogenic infections and cancer. UAB boasts of the premiere Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) which was established in 1988 and is comprised of over $90 million in reseach funding.

Typical graduate student research projects focus on the understanding of the mechanisms of HIV-mediated T-cell killing as well as on the development and testing of novel preventive and therapeutic vaccines against HIV/AIDS.
