About the MCP Graduate Program

Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. students in the Molecular & Cellular Pathology Graduate Program have diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds. MCP students have won prestigious awards from organizations such as the American Diabetes Association, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the American Society for Cell Biology, the American Society for Investigative Pathology, the Gordon Conferences, Sigma Xi national scientific honor society, National Student Research Forum, Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine, and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. MCP students are also campus leaders, participating in governing bodies such as the Graduate Student Association.

MCP students have earned positions in academia, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, and government organizations. Over the last decade, more than two-thirds of our students receiving Ph.D.'s under MCP Graduate Program faculty have obtained academic positions at the level of Assistant Professor or higher. Our graduates have become chairpersons of academic departments at major research institutions and heads of research at pharmaceutical companies.

About the Admission Process

The UAB MCP Program accepts students from broad scientific backgrounds such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, as well as from more focused disciplines such as Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Physiology, and professional programs such as Medicine and Dentistry.  Admission is selective, but all prospective students are encouraged to apply.

GPA, GRE scores, recommendation letters, and personal essay are all significant factors in admission decisions, but most important is a sincere passion and interest for research.

Competitive applicants will be invited for an expenses-paid interview where they will have ample opportunity to tour the campus, meet current faculty and students, and explore what Birmingham has to offer.

For more information on our program, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone at 205-934-2445 or by email at MCPGrad@uab.edu.
