Within a month of starting veterinary
school at Mississippi State, I realized that what I truly enjoyed was my
undergraduate research experience. Changing course, I added a Microbiology major
and Biochemistry minor to my Biological Science degree and then came to UAB for
the undergraduate PREP (Program for Research Experience in Pathology). After the
busiest month of my life (graduating, getting married, and moving to
Birmingham), I then began my Ph.D. work under the Howard Hughes Med-to-Grad
Fellowship in the summer of 2007.

I am under the Howard Hughes
Med-into-Grad Fellowship, a program designed to train graduate student
specifically in translational research and drug discovery. UAB is one of only
thirteen schools to have received funding from the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute (HHMI). I feel that the specialized curriculum and the enrichment
program offered through the fellowship will be an invaluable asset to me as I
pursue my Ph.D. and then continue my career at a research
institution.
