General Research Interests:

Bone metabolism

Although insulin signaling is well studied in many tissues and cell types, a little is known about its role in regulating bone metabolism. The study of insulin-specific signaling is complicated by cross-activation of insulin receptor (IR) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) receptor (IGF-1R) by both insulin and IGF-1.

We have developed a system to knockout IR, IGF-1R or both specifically in osteoblasts in mice which presents an opportunity to study independent roles of insulin and IGF-1 in bone metabolism and remodeling.

This study will provide a better explanation for diabetes induced osteoporosis, decreased bone mass and increased bone fracture rates.
