After graduating from Penn State I spent a year working as a research technician at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and then as an associate scientist in the immunobiology department of Centocor. Knowing I wanted to be involved in research focusing on human disease, I felt it necessary to be part of a strong pathology program.

I chose UAB based on the diversity and strength
of research taking place within the pathology department.

General Research Interests:

Cancer Metastasis

I work in the laboratory of Dr. Danny R. Welch investigating the molecular mechanisms of the metastasis suppressor proteins BRMS1 and KISS1.

More specifically, BRMS1 (Breast Metastasis Suppressor 1) blocks metastasis but does not inhibit tumorigenicity in human breast carcinoma and human melanoma. Recent work in the laboratory has elucidated clues as to the biochemical mechanisms of how this protein may be functioning, by forming complexes with retinoblastoma-binding protein 1 (RBP1) and the mSin3 histone deacetylase complex to repress transcription. There is also new evidence that the actions of BRMS1 may involve reduction of phosphoinositide signaling, and has been shown in MDA-MB-435 breast
