Dario Vitturi won a travel award at the Third International Meeting on the Role of Nitrite in Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Therapeutics" held between June 17-18, 2009, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.  Congratulations, Dario!

  • March 25, 2009

Liselle Bovell got the Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award for her abstract submitted to the AACR meeting (see email below). Also, her study has been identified as newsworthy for the AACR100th Annual Meeting 2009 to be held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado April 18-22, 2009 and will be released to the media.

Joel Jules received the Second Place Award in the Basic Science Oral Presentations from Eastern-Atlantic Student Research Forum 2009 which was held last week. For the Basic Science Presentations, they selected the top 14 abstracts for oral presentations, out of which they selected 3 students for overall best oral presentation, first and second places of outstanding oral presentations.

Lidong Zhai received travel award for posters titled "Potential Role of Reactive Oxygen Species in Hemorrhage-induced Hepatic Insulin Resistance" and "Two Phases of Acute insulin Resistance Following Hemorrhage"

Shaoning Jiang received travel award for poster titled "Effects of Adenovirus Infection on Insulin Signaling Molecules and Glucose Homeostasis"

MCP students participated in the Graduate School Student Research Day - Our students made up about 10% of the talks/presentations.

The MCP winners of the Graduate School Student Research Day were:

Lauren Van Duyn won a $500 travel award at the recent American Society for Matrix Biology Meeting.  She was one of ten awarded from over 250 posters presented.

Congratulations to Scott Isbell for his selection by the Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship Program Steering Committe to represent UAB and the UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship Program at the national Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) meeting in Chevy Chase, Maryland, September 24-26, 2007.

Each year the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) convenes a meeting of its predoctoral fellows. This is an opportunity for fellows to meet one another, present and discuss their research, and talk informally with HHMI staff about the fellowship programs.  Each student attending the meeting must give a 15-minute talk or a poster presentation of their research.

Congratulations to Pathology PhD Candidate, Saman Khaled, who was one of only fifteen graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and working scientists from 11 different countries selected for the NASA Space Radiation Summer School at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory.  Saman is a member of Dr. Dennis Kucik’s laboratory.

John Wang was a semi-finalist for the Samuel B Barker award for Excellence in Research by a Graduate Student. The title of his talk was “Increased Expression of IFNa and IL-6 by Hyperactive Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells in BXD2 Autoimmune Mice”.  The award was presented at the Department of Medicine Trainee Research Symposium ceremony on April 23, 2007. Also, John Wang was invited to present his data in an oral presentation at the Arthritis Research Conference at Atlanta Georgia, on April 20-22, 2007.  Congratulations to John Wang for making excellent progress with his research.

Congratulations to Pathology Ph.D. Candidate Pritish Pawar for being awarded the AACR Scholar-in-Training Award for the annual conference held in Los Angeles, CA, from April 14-18, 2007.  Pritish is a member of Dr. Jay McDonald's laboratory.

Congratulations to Joo-Yeun Oh (Mentor: Victor Darley-Usmar, Ph.D.) and Jason Ashley (Mentor: Xu Feng, Ph.D.) for their outstanding performance at the UAB Graduate Student Research Day on March 1-2, 2007.  Both Joo-Yeun and Jason received 3rd Place Awards for their research.

Congratulations to Pathology PhD Candidate Melissa Talbert for being chosen as recipient of the Charles A. McCallum Medal and monetary award.  Melissa was awarded overall winner/Best in Show of the annual UAB School of Dentistry Scholar's Symposium, which included categories for both pre- and post-doctoral basic and clinical sciences.  Of all these candidates, Melissa was named Best in Show.  Melissa is a member of Dr. Joanne Murphy-Ullrich's laboratory.

Congratulations to Pathology PhD Candidate T. Scott Isbell for being chosen as recipient of the 2007 UAB Graduate School Dean's Award, the Samuel B. Barker Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies, at the Ph.D. level.  Scott's mentor is Dr. Rakesh Patel. 

“The Barker Award”, named for UAB’s first graduate dean, Dr. Samuel Booth Barker, is given each spring to one Ph.D. student and one Masters student, both of whom expect to receive their degrees within the calendar year.

Scott will be recognized at the Graduate School Research Day Awards Luncheon on Friday, March 9, 2007.  However, The Barker Award will be presented officially at the UAB Honors Convocation at the Alys Stephens Center on Friday, May 4, 2007.

Congratulations to Pathology PhD Candidate Melissa Talbert for being selected to receive travel funds from the AADR's Bloc Travel Grant to attend the 85th IADR General Session & Exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana in March 2007.  This grant was awarded to the AADR by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).  Melissa is a member of Dr. Joanne Murphy-Ullrich’s laboratory.

Congratulations to Pathology Ph.D. Candidate Scott Isbell for being accepted to attend the NIH National Graduate Student Research Festival.  The festival is scheduled for October 12-13, 2006, and will take place at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.  Acceptance to this festival was based on selected submitted abstracts.  Scott is a member of Dr. Rakesh Patel's lab.
