The UAB Howard Hughes Medical Institute Med-Grad Fellowship (HMGF) program will accept six highly motivated and academically qualified applicants each year who will matriculate through one of the existing interdisciplinary graduate programs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Applications for the UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship are currently being accepted for Fall 2008 matriculation. The HMGF application deadline is April 15, 2008.
Who is eligible for consideration as a UAB Hughes Med-Grad Scholar in the Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship Program?
Students who have applied or are applying to one of the participating graduate programs listed below are eligible for consideration as a UAB Hughes Med-Grad Scholar:
- Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics
- Biostatistics
- Cellular and Molecular Biology Graduate Program
- Epidemiology
- Genetics
- Integrative Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program
- Molecular and Cellular Pathology
- Neuroscience Training Program
- Nutrition Sciences
- Toxicology
Application to the UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship
To be considered for the UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship, prospective applicants must submit a UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship essay to the graduate program to which they are applying in addition to the application materials required by that graduate program. Prospective applicants should adhere to the admissions requirements and application deadlines specified by the program to which they are applying.
The UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship Essay
Prospective applicants who wish to be considered as a UAB Hughes Med-Grad Scholar must submit an essay which answers the following question: "How will the Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship prepare me for a career in biomedical research? (i.e., why choose this program and not the traditional basic science Ph.D. route)." The deadline for submitting the UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship essay is April 15, 2008.
Essays must be no more than 2 pages in length, double-spaced, in Times New Roman, 12 pt font. Essays must include a cover page with the full name of the applicant (first, middle, last name), date of birth, Social Security number, and UAB graduate program(s) to which he/she has applied.
UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship essays must be submitted to the graduate program to which the prospective applicant is applying. The graduate program will then forward the complete application packet to the HMGF selection committee for review.
Selection and Interview of Prospective UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship Applicants
Essays submitted by prospective applicants will be reviewed by the UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship selection committee. Information provided in the essays and in the submitted graduate program application materials will be considered in the selection of applicants for UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship interviews. Prospective applicants who are recommended for consideration will be invited to participate in Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship selection interviews.
Acceptance as a UAB Hughes Med-Grad Scholar
Prospective applicants will be notified as to whether or not they are accepted as UAB Hughes Med-Grad Scholars. Acceptance as a UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellow and funding of the Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship is contingent upon acceptance and matriculation of the prospective applicant into a participating UAB graduate program and upon acceptance of the prospective applicant as a UAB Hughes Med-Grad Scholar. The UAB Hughes Med-Grad Fellowship status and funding is also dependent upon successful academic progress within the recipient's graduate program of study.
