Application Process
The program fills all positions through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). The program also participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), a service of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) that transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, Dean's Letters/MSPE, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and medical schools to residency programs using the Internet.
January 10 is the deadline for receipt of all completed applications and required information. This date, which differs from the date set by the National Resident Matching Program, allows faculty time to adequately review and evaluate applications carefully.
In addition to the requirements of the ACGME, all applicants must meet the following criteria before an application will be processed:
- Eligiblilty to participate in the NRMP.
- Successful completion of Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), or equivalent.
- Minimum score of 80 for each the Step 1 and Step 2 examinations (not an average of both).
- Acceptable licensure status as defined by the State of Alabama.
- ECFMG certification (for foreign medical graduates).
- Should not have been out of direct clinical practice (defined as enrollment in medical school/residency or in private practice) for more than three years prior to entering the residency.
Interviews
Interviews normally are not scheduled until completed applications are received. Interviews for NRMP participants will be conducted from November 1 until February 1, and are scheduled as closely to the date of an applicant's preference as possible. Interviews are scheduled throughout the year for medical students graduating early as well as for physicians leaving military service or the Public Health Service who want non-traditional starting dates, provided off-cycle positions are available. Interviews are scheduled with several faculty and residents and partners or spouses are welcome to participate. Furthermore, informal discussions with our residents are encouraged.
Tours
Applicants will have an opportunity to tour the UAB Huntsville Family Medicine Center (and the rest of the campus) and Huntsville Hospital, and are encouraged to allow time to become acquainted with the many cultural and geographic attractions of Huntsville and North Alabama.
