SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP
Introduction
The University of Alabama Huntsville Regional Medical Campus offers a fellowship year in Sports Medicine to prepare residency-trained primary care physicians for careers in the clinical or academic practice of Sports Medicine. Successful completion of the fellowship qualifies the fellow to sit for the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine examination offered jointly by the American Board of Family Practice, the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the American Board of Pediatrics.
Scope
The fellow is afforded ample opportunity to actively participate in the real-world practice of sports medicine involving professional, amateur, and recreational athletes. The director of the fellowship, Dr. Mike Linder, serves as team physician for the following organizations, with whom the fellow will be involved during training:
Curriculum: Clinic
A large part of the fellow's time is spent in outpatient clinical activities.
- Seven half-days each week are spent at SportsMed, 16-physician and 2-podiatrist full-service orthopedic group based in Huntsville. The fellow rotates through clinical services such as orthopedics, physical therapy, and exercise testing. Observership of staff physicians is an important part of the education process as well as the fellow's own sports medicine continuity clinics, in which the fellow will see their own patients and discuss them with SportsMed attendings.
- One half-day each week is spent at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Athlete's Clinic, where sports medicine services are provided to UAH student athletes.
- One half-day each week is spent in the fellow's own family medicine continuity clinic at the UAB Health Center Huntsville.

Curriculum: Event Coverage
The fellow provides medical coverage for various athletic events including marathons, triathlons, tennis tournaments, soccer tournaments, and occasionally even professional wrestling events. In addition, the fellow is involved in providing coverage for high school football and college basketball, baseball, soccer, track, cross-country, tennis, volleyball, and ice hockey. The fellow's only night and/or weekend call responsibilities involve event coverage.
Curriculum: Research
A research project and publication are requirements for successful completion of the fellowship. One half-day per week is provided in the fellow's schedule to allow for these scholarly activities.
Prerequisites
Completion of an ACGME-accredite residency in primary care and eligibility for an Alabama license.
Salary and Benefits
The fellow's salary and benefits are paid according to the UAB system-wide standards for PGY4 housestaff. For 2003-2004, the salary is $41,348 per year. Benefits include three weeks paid vacation, a generous CME allowance, and insurance benefits explained more fully on the UAB Benefits Web site.
