The UAB Cytopathology laboratory is staffed by American Board of Pathology certified Cytopathologists and ASCP registered Cytotechnologists. The Cytopathology section is accredited for two ACGME-approved fellowship positions and actively participates in research studies. The faculty and staff support two of 72 ACGME Cytopathology Fellowship Programs and two of 48 CAAHEP accredited Schools of Cytotechnology in the United States.
On an annual basis, the laboratory processes over 20,000 Pap tests, with 98% being Thinprep Pap. Over 4,000 Non-Gynecologic samples are processed including specimens from an active FNA service. Five anatomic pathologists have rotational service responsibilities. The division has 6 cytotechnologists who serve as clinical faculty for the Cytotechnology Programs and 4 support staff members.
Service is provided for in-patients, The Kirklin Clinic outpatients and a large outreach laboratory. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8-5. An on-call pathologist is available for emergencies.
Quality performance indicators are actively monitored for the entire process of laboratory service including specimen collection, correlation of cytology and surgical pathology (biopsy) results and Turn-around-Times.
Both screening (cervical cancer) and diagnostic (FNA and Non-Gynecologic specimens) interpretations are performed.
Cytopathology also offers expert consultation services for specimens collected/evaluated in other institutions.
