Because UAB physicians and nurses helped design the new University Hospital, every detail reflects their dedication to the well-being of their patients. The result? UAB is proud to unveil a new, world-class, family-focused medical facility right here in Birmingham. The new University Hospital, located at the corner of 6th Avenue and 18th Street South, features the most technologically advanced equipment in a comfortable, healing setting.
Our commitment to fulfilling those expectations begins even before you step inside the new hospital. A five-story parking deck is located directly north of the facility, with convenient valet parking. No matter the weather, you can walk comfortably through a climate-controlled bridge on the second floor directly into the hospital.
The University Emergency Department (UED) has been greatly expanded to serve those needing urgent care. As big as a football field, the UED houses 46 private exam rooms. With expanded imaging capabilities, UED physicians can immediately get the tests they need to diagnose and treat patients.
Continually improving our efficiency and saving lives requires sophisticated technology. Operating suites are equipped with high-tech monitoring equipment that brings together the expertise of a team of UAB specialists.
The facilities also are designed to keep patients and their loved ones as close together as possible. Each unit has a waiting room on the same floor. An outdoor healing garden, with lush plants and waterfalls, provides a soothing spot to meditate or talk. Large, private patient rooms are cozy and family friendly.
“Our staff has always been dedicated to patient care,” says Susan Barrow, RN, BSN, nurse manager of University Hospital’s Cardiovascular Operating Rooms (OR). “But now these changes enable us to do our jobs even better.
