Welcome to UAB Cytopathology. Diagnostic cytopathology is an exciting field in which pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions, infectious organisms and other diseases are detected microscopically in gynecological and non-gynecological specimens.  The UAB cytopathology section is committed to achieving and maintaining excellence in the field as set forth by the father of modern cytology Dr. George Papanicolau.  The field of cytology is ever evolving and we are prepared to evolve as well.  Our staff has a wide range of expertise and we receive a broad spectrum of specimens from our world class hospital.  A culture of consistent learning is cultivated through numerous continuing education activities in order to stay abreast of the latest procedures and current events within the field.  We strive to maintain a close relationship with our referring physicians in an effort to enhance their ability to manage their patients effectively.
