Specimen

Special blue-stopper tube with bright yellow label available only from the coagulation lab - call 934-8650.

Specimen Management Do not centrifuge. Maintain specimen at room temperature and do not allow warming to above 75°F. Transport to coagulation laboratory within four hours of collection.

Description The semiquantitative fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products test may be used in the diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and primary fibrinolysis.

Follow-up Test The D-dimer is the preferred assay for disseminated intravascular coagulation, but it may be used together with the fibrin (ogen) degradation products tests to distinguish DIC from primary fibrinolysis. Other DIC assays include the fibrinogen assay, APTT, PT, and platelet count.
